Finding Something to do in Singapore
18 March 2007
Singapore
We arrived in Singapore yesterday, and already we miss Thailand! Everything here is expensive – although we've heard that food is cheap – even more expensive than the U.S. For some reason, every hotel and hostel in Singapore is full. When we arrived at Bugis Backpackers, we took the last available room! Later, after settling in to the new pace of things, we took a walk over to ‘Little India,’ which didn't impress us too much. Everything closed at 11 p.m., so we went back to our room and had a good rest in our air-conditioned room on our comfortable bed. I'm not sure what Singapore has in store for us, but it seems like five days might be a bit too much time here. Today, we plan to go to Chinatown, but the owner of this hostel advised us to walk slowly, as Singapore is a small place and if we walk too fast, we'll quickly run out of things to see. What can we do? Today is Sunday and we're not booked to leave until Thursday. Perhaps we have to accept that prices are higher here and bite the financial bullet, so to speak. Hopefully, we can find something fun to do that costs little or no money. Oh, how we miss Thailand!

In fact, we did find something to do in Singapore, though it wasn't quite what we had hoped for. Andy had been suffering from a knee injury (see ‘A Rambling Journey …’), and the owner of the hostel convinced us that we should see a doctor. We saw a doctor, who was very concerned by the knee. Immediately, exams were conducted. An MRI was scheduled. The results came back and the doctor strongly advised surgery. Within three days, Andy had been diagnosed and operated on. The level of service was so high at Raffles Hospital, that the nurse even personally pushed Andy back in his wheelchair from the hospital to the hostel – it was quite a sight to see Andy being given a wheelchair tour of Singapore! The morning after the surgery, which finished at approximately 5 p.m., we were on a flight from Singapore to Perth. The surgery, unfortunately, does not qualify as fun, nor as inexpensive! However, it had to be done and hopefully knee troubles will soon be a thing of the past!
