Malaysia
Malaysia? Not This Time
7 July 2007
Christchurch, New Zealand
[In an attempt to patch up some holes in our narration, we are posting a brief entry about Malaysia, though we are now in New Zealand. However, we'll continue to include the date and place where the entry was written, though the subject matter is on a different time and place.]
Our original plans for Southeast Asia would take us from Thailand to Singapore by land, meaning we would spend a fair amount of time in Malaysia. We had also considered visiting Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam; however our love for Thailand made us unwilling to split our already limited time between so many places. Instead, we concentrated on Bangkok and northern Thailand, meaning we didn't go to the south of Thailand or Malaysia, nor did we make it to the other countries in Southeast Asia.
We were ready to buy a train ticket and explore Malaysia for a few days, but when we compared the price of the train ticket with the airfare, the choice was obvious. Further, we had bought a laptop in Bangkok, and if we left by air we would be eligible to receive our taxes back, while if we took the train, we wouldn't be. This amounted to nearly US$100, and as the train was more expensive and would take a lot longer than a flight, we finalized the decision and bought a flight on Air Asia.
We have heard many great things about Malaysia, and we certainly hope to return to Southeast Asia, where a visit to Malaysia, as well as Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam and southern Thailand will be obligatory!
