Bahrain
A Layover and an Injection in Arabia
7 July 2007
Christchurch, New Zealand
[In an attempt to patch up some holes in our narration, we are posting a brief entry about Bahrain, though we are now in New Zealand. However, we'll continue to include the date and place where the entry was written, though the subject matter is on a different time and place.]
Our time in Bahrain essentially was a layover on the way from Athens to Mumbai, with a stop at the airport medical clinic. It was also the staging ground for what must have been the strangest flight we've been on so far (see The Flight of the Hajis). We weren't allowed to leave the airport, as we were only transients. The airport itself is quite amazing: more like a shopping mall than an airport. It also seems very ‘Western’ for being on the eastern seaboard of the Arabian Peninsula.
The unexpected stop at the airport medical clinic came about because something had bitten Liza in Athens and her arm had swollen like a water balloon! We made our way around the terminal and found the clinic, where Liza was given an injection and a salve. We were also given warnings about looking out for creepy-crawlers that bite in India by the attending nurse, who was from Delhi.
Certainly, the little time we spent in one of the Arab world's major transportation hubs showed us once again the dynamic nature of many things in the Arab world. We look forward to learning more about the language and culture of this area of the world and coming back with plenty of time!
